1
INSPIRE harmonization of dataset, an example
Marianne B. Wiese Cand. It System developer
2
Jordartskort (Soil map) 1:1m must be provided as an INSPIRE data service
3
Every legend unit has a code and a description:
Ex.: F: Freshwater formation (Danish: Ferskvandsdannelse):

GEUS contribution to OneGeology
OneGeology Europe is an European cooperation that collects and exhibits geological data. In connection with a new publication of OneGeology, it was made possible for the participants to exhibit data as an INSPIRE compatible service. A general guidance was created for all the participants to use. The British Geological Survey did the task as a contribution to JRC
5
Cookbooks that can be used for the conversion of OneGeology-Europe web services to INSPIRE web services
7
Every legend unit must be translated to 5 INSPIRE attributes:
Units from Jordartskort (Soil map) INSPIRE attributes for geological maps Description Age
8
For every attribute exists an INSPIRE codelist
Ex: Geologic Unit
9
INSPIRE codelist for geology:
Is quite comprehensive Is built hierarchically Can contain multiple levels (7) Has varying detailing Is defined by specialists Contains redundant information Is difficult to get an overview of
10
The geologists opinion:
The INSPIRE classification is completely different from GEUS’ The INSPIRE codes should not be mixed with the codelists made by GEUS INSPIRE codelists needs to be written in spreadsheet to give a better overview There is over thousands of hours work in a correct transcoding
11
The responsible at GEUS thinks that . . .
It is possible to download INSPIRE codelists in different formats It is possible (manually) to structure a codelist hierarchically in the JSON format Then every codelist can be exhibit as an ”tree-structure”, that folds out
12
Visualization of codelists helps the understanding of it:
13
The geologists with the responsibility can now easily contribute by choosing the best terms from the INSPIRE codelists
14
GEUS’ Jordartskort (Soil map) can now be published as an INSPIRE service with standardized color-codes
15
Harvested INSPIRE data is also presented via EGDI EuroGeoSurveys' European Geological Data Infrastructure Portal
16
So far so good, BUT: The used INSPIRE codelists are a snapshot collected from the official site in spring 2016. JRC is still refining the INSPIRE codelists. It would be smart if INSPIRE offered all codelists as a hierarchically JSON document. That would make it easy for all data providers to visualize the currently valid codelists, and so make harmonization easier.
