Warmup On your warmup sheet, please put today’s date in the Date column Please write “persuasive writing” as your warmup Answer the following question on a separate sheet of paper: How long does something/someone have to be gone/dead for research to be considered “anthropology/archaeology” versus “grave robbing”?

Cartography Cartographer:
The creation of maps including projection and design A person who draws or produces maps Cartographer:
4
Map Projection Definition: representing the spherical earth on a plane (flat) surface It is impossible to transform a sphere into something flat without creating distortions in the 2-D image. Geographers use numerous mathematical equations to produce map projections.
5
Mercator Projection Most common map projection since 1569
Distorts the size & shape of the continents (especially Greenland & Antarctica) Meridians do not converge
6
Conic Projection Not geometrically accurate. Better for regional or hemispheric maps
7
Interrupted Projection
Show’s true size and shape Distances are inaccurate and map is broken in many places
8
Robinson’s Projection
Scales vary throughout the map More distortion at the poles World map used by National Geographic since 1988
9
Azimuthal Projection Size & distances distorted the further away you get from the starting point Distances between two places are accurate on a straight line through the starting point only Used for aviation
10
The real size of countries and continents
A PERFECT PROJECTION? WHAT’S UP WITH THE GLOBE?
