1 How do our bodies keep everything the same?
Homeostasis How do our bodies keep everything the same? This was the international space station that has now been decommissioned. RESOUCES: lung capacity machine Video 165, hydrogen carbonate indicator and a straw. Kidney to dissect Starter: Make a list of conditions this had to supply to astronauts in order for them to survive?

2 They would need Oxygen Correct mineral ions Removal of CO2
Constant Temperature Air in all areas so the astronauts could move about

3 Glossary Homeostasis: - the maintenance of a constant internal environment. Watch this video …

4 Homeostasis Inside your body you have to maintain conditions so that our cells can work properly. We have lots of control systems in place to do this.

5 So Homeostasis is … The maintenance of a constant internal environment . But why? If water or ion content varies then water will move in/ out of cells and damage them. Need a careful balance for correct functioning.

6 Think – Pair – Share What happens if your body is the wrong temperature. Challenge : use the word “enzymes” in your answer.

7 Enzymes These speed up reactions without being used up.
They are specific shapes to fit specific chemicals

8 37oC is the optimum temperature
Enzymes are proteins that work best at 37oC. Too hot and they break, too cold and they stop working. 37oC is the optimum temperature Q: what else is 37oC??

9 The Inuit and Tuareg

10 The Inuit people live on the Arctic coasts, for example parts of Greenland, Siberia, and Alaska.

11 Average temperatures in the far north of Alaska range from –30 °C in winter to 2 °C in summer. Further south the temperature range is –12 °C to 15 °C.

12 The Tuareg live mainly in West Africa, for example Mali.

13 The average temperature in Mali ranges from 25 °C in winter to 35 °C.

14 Task Make a list of ways the Inuit can actively try to keep warm.
Make a list of ways the Tuareg can try to keep cool.

15 Surface temperature vs body temperature.
What is your internal body temperature? Do your internal and external body temperature remain constant all the time? Why? Where are the main receptors for temperature control?
