1 Resources Lessons 6 and 7 World topography map – hand out ICT suite booked for ArcGIS ArcGIS Year 7 login sheets x10

2 Be certain of these key words
Speed through this

3 Terrestrial = the land Speed through this

4 Marine = the sea/ocean Speed through this

5 Remember which word means which!
Terrestrial Mountain range Ice sheet Plateau Plain Marine Continental shelf Mid-ocean ridge Abyssal plain Ocean trench Speed through this

6 B A is the mountain range B is the ice sheet Speed through this A

7 C is the plateau D is the plain C Speed through this D

8 E is the ocean trench; F is the abyssal plain
Speed through this F

9 G is the mid-ocean ridge; H is the continental shelf
Speed through this G is the mid-ocean ridge; H is the continental shelf

10 GeoWilmington>Year 7>Earth’s Topography map (TABLET version)
GeoWilmington>Year 7>Earth’s Topography map (TABLET version). Have your ‘####_wgsg’ ArcGIS login ready. Students open the map. The link is on GeoWilmington. Use the handouts with the credentials to view the map

11 Hand out the world maps. Students will need to colour code and annotate their map (see next slide). This is their visual literacy assessment.

12 Terrestrial topography (Ice sheets)
Turn on layer 8 only Ice sheets are large and white. Altitude over 2000m. Use pencil and write “IS” on your map

13 Terrestrial topography – (Plains, Mountain ranges, Plateaus)
Layers 2 and 3 only. Plains are green. Altitude under 200m. In pencil write: “PLN” Mountain ranges are brown in narrow belts. Altitude 2000m. In pencil write: “MR” Plateaus in yellow/brown. Mostly 1000m (from 400m to 5000m). In pencil write “PLAT”

14 Marine topography Layers 4, 5 and 6
Mid-ocean ridges are lightish blue. Depth approx. 3000m. In pencil write: “MOR” Ocean trenches are dark blue in very narrow belts. Depth 6000m. In pencil write: “OT” Continental shelves are very light blue. Depth less than 100m. In pencil write “CS” Abyssal plains are large dark blue areas. Depth 5000m. In pencil write “AP”

15 Now colour your key in exactly these colours!
IS Orange Yellow Green Light Blue Dark Blue Purple Red Now colour your key in exactly these colours! They must use this colour key. Use pencil to start with e.g. Ice Sheet = IS. They will need to add on some continental shelves and abyssal plains as these are not added on the map. Students can also add more areas of mountains and plains as not all are plotted.

16 Assessment Instructions
Use the web map to colour your map correctly. Add 3 areas of continental shelf and 3 areas of abyssal plain. Add annotations. One sentence for 10 named places (one for each of the features in your key). Annotations have text linked with arrows to the feature. Write a paragraph to describe the distribution of Earth’s physical topographic features (terrestrial and marine). They must use this colour key. Use pencil to start with e.g. Ice Sheet = IS. They will need to add on some continental shelves and abyssal plains as these are not added on the map. Students can also add more areas of mountains and plains as not all are plotted. Can download, edit and print off word doc in colour.

17 Level 4 W.I.L.F. “What I’m Looking For:”
High precision in colouring the map. At least 36 features correctly coloured. You annotate at least 8 different types of features. Your annotations include the name of the feature and some brief information or stats about it. Arrows touch the feature. You write a paragraph to describe the distribution of at least 3 topographic features. Level 2 W.I.L.F. “What I’m Looking For:” Limited precision in colouring the map. At least 20 features correctly coloured. Your annotations include place names. Arrows are close to the feature You make straightforward comments about the map. Students fill in an exit ticket

18 Examples of named features you might wish to research and annotate onto your map.
Mountain range Rockies, Andes, Alps, Pyrenees, Himalayas Continental shelf Southeast Asia, European Ice sheet East Antarctic ice sheet, Greenland ice sheet Mid-ocean ridge Atlantic Plateau Tibetan Plateau, Bolivian Altiplano Abyssal Plain North East Atlantic Students should annotate one of each of these onto their map. Maximum 10 annotations! This is part of their visual literacy assessment too. The skill is annotating. Plain North China Plain, Ganges Ocean trench Peru-Chile, Mariana
