Types of Law CRIMINAL LAW DEFINITION: based on federal and state laws that concern wrongdoing to people and property EXAMPLES: Murder, Rape, Arson, etc.

Types of Law CIVIL LAW DEFINITION: regulates disagreements between people or parties (outcome is usually money or property) EXAMPLES: Divorce, Custody, Lawsuits

DEFINITION: law that originates in the Constitution of the United States EXAMPLES: Freedom of Speech, Treason, etc.

JURISDICTION JURISDICTION: the geographic area in which a law can be enforced Types of Jurisdiction Federal/National State Local

TYPES OF JURISDICTION FEDERAL/NATIONAL: originates from a violation of a law made by Congress or in the U.S. Constitution EXAMPLES: Counterfeiting, Income Tax Fraud, Treason, etc.

TYPES OF JURISDICTION STATE: originates from a violation of a law made by a state legislature or in a state constitution EXAMPLES: Alcohol Sales, Domestic Violence, Assault, etc.

TYPES OF JURISDICTION LOCAL: originates from a violation of a law made by a town or city council or in a town/city charter (ordinances) EXAMPLES: Noise ordinance, leash laws, curfews, etc.
