1 Organizers Qing Jiang Mao S. Wu Eveline Baesu
14th US Congress of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Blacksburg, VA June , 2002 Symposium on Contemporary Issues in Mechanics - in Honor of the Contributions of Millard F. Beatty Organizers Qing Jiang Mao S. Wu Eveline Baesu Sponsored by: Department of Engineering Mechanics, University of Nebraska-Lincoln ASME Committee on Elasticity ASME Committee on Electronic Materials and Technology 9/22/2018

2 Millard F. Beatty Professor Emeritus, University of Nebraska-Lincoln ( ) Professor Emeritus, University of Kentucky ( ) Dr. Millard F. Beatty, Fellow of the ASME, has a long and distinguished career in research, teaching, professional service, and academic leadership. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, he has served three universities since 1963: Universities of Delaware, Kentucky and Nebraska-Lincoln. After twenty-three years at Kentucky, in 1990 he assumed the chair position in the Engineering Mechanics Department at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Under his leadership ( ), the department evolved rapidly into a center of mechanics research in the country. His dedication, enthusiasm and standard of excellence have earned the greatest respect and support from the faculty, and his mentoring of junior faculty has been highly appreciated. 3 Millard F. Beatty Professor Emeritus, University of Nebraska-Lincoln ( ) Professor Emeritus, University of Kentucky ( ) Dr. Beatty is an internationally recognized expert in nonlinear elasticity, continuum mechanics and nonlinear vibrations. In recent years, he has dedicated his research efforts to the study of stress softening effects in rubberlike materials, nonlinear oscillations of rubber suspension systems, and Bell-constrained materials. He has published over ninety journal and book articles in these and other areas. His research has been supported almost continuously by the National Science Foundation since 1965, including topics such as nonlinear elasticity and stability, mechanics of elastomers and biological tissues, and the Mullins effect in hyperelastic materials. Dr. Beatty is a founding co-editor of the journal Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids. He has also served as Chair in professional societies such as the Society for Natural Philosophy and the ASME Elasticity Committee. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics. 9/22/2018
