1 To revise and develop our understanding of editing.

2 Editing helps the audience understand the sequence of events.
Editing is a process which describes how film clips are pieced together. They often depend on speed. Editing helps the audience understand the sequence of events.

3 Place the following six shots in chronological order:
Sequence of Events Place the following six shots in chronological order:

4 Editing Iron Man 2 How did you know the correct order?
How did you know the correct order? Editing places scenes in chronological order, and decides the pace of the film.

5 Types of Edits CUT FADE CROSS-CUTTING
Like a dissolve, but here the shot disappears to leave a black screen CUT When the audience is shown two different narratives together (A criminal on the run and the police chasing him/her) FADE CROSS-CUTTING Where one shot changes to another (the most common type of edit)

6 While watching, take note of the following:
Editing for Pace Watch the following three scenes: Gravity The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (2:50-4:00) Quantum of Solace While watching, take note of the following: Which clip uses a single shot, multiple shots, and cross-cutting? Which scene has more cuts? Why? How does the pace of the scene impact the narrative? Gravity is one continuous shot, while Quantum of Solace uses cross-cutting to show the relationship between the two chases. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly uses multiple cuts to increase the tension of the stand-off.

7 How does editing affect the pace of a scene?
Editing for Pace How does editing affect the pace of a scene? Answer in three paragraphs, each for every scene, using the DCSE format: D = What happens in the scene? How many cuts are used? C = What do rapid cuts/single shot/cross-cutting connote? S = How do the rapid cuts/single shot/cross-cutting change the tone? E = What is the effect on the audience?

8 D.C.S.E. Exemplar Paragraph
In the scene from Gravity, one continuous shot is used while two astronauts work on repairing their ship. This movement connotes the endless space, and the flowing motions of the astronauts while working with no gravity. This is done to signify that at no moment the two characters are safe, as their actions, decisions, and mistakes are not limited by the rules of Earth. In fact, their actions are chaotic due to the lack of gravity. This editing would cause anxiety and fear of outer space in the audience, since this type of editing shows the errors that can be caused in space, and the lack of stability that comes as a result. D = What happens in the scene? How many cuts are used? C = What do rapid cuts/single shot/cross-cutting connote? S = How do the rapid cuts/single shot/cross-cutting change the tone? E = What is the effect on the audience?
