Symbolism What is symbolism?
The use of symbols to represent ideas or qualities. Symbolic meaning attributed to natural objects or facts. How is it used in literature? is a figure of speech than is used when an author wants to create a certain mood or emotion in a work of literature. Symbolism is the use of an object, person, situation, or word to represent something else (an idea) in literature.
5
Examples of Symbolism Metaphor - a figure of speech used when a comparison between two unlike things without using the words 'like' or 'as.' For example, the phrase 'time is money' is an example of a metaphor comparing time to money. Money and time are two different things; this is an example of symbolism because these words show the importance of using your money and time wisely.
6
Examples of Symbolism Allegory - an extended metaphor; an allegory can be an entire story, poem, or book with symbolism that continues throughout the literary piece. In the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell, animals on a farm are used to represent the events leading up to the Russian revolution. The animals on the farm represent how unconcern for others and greed impact revolution.

Symbolism in MACBETH What symbols can you think of?
Let Make a list regarding Macbeth
12
Symbolism in MACBETH Based on our list of Symbols… What might they represent? (Think Abstractly)
13
Symbolism in MACBETH Choose on of the symbols and write about how it functions in the text? What does it add to the story? What does it illuminate about the Characters? What does it reveal about the Theme?
14
Symbolism in MACBETH Now create your own thesis to answer the prompt. But first lets review how to write better Thesis (Intro) and Thematic (Concl.) Statements
15
Homework: 3/18 Based on your Thesis (assertion) and Thematic, construct two body paragraph based on the format discussed in class.

FQ: How can recognizing symbols and their meanings help us to support our assertions about Macbeth (The Scottish Play not character)? Do Now: Looking back at you assertion/thesis what examples do you plan to use to support your point? Be specific and include examples (pair share)
18
In order to write a thesis statement you must have
a SUBJECT (the piece of literature or some specific aspect of it) and your opinion about that subject Take the SUBJECT and make an assertion about it. (What do you believe to be true?) Because the statement is an opinion, it “begs” to be argued. In other words, you write your assertions about the literature and spend the rest of the essay defending and proving those assertions. It lets the reader of your essay know from the very beginning what your opinion is and what you intend to prove/show in the paper.
19
Example of Thesis Sample prompt for writing a thesis statement: Read the following poem carefully. Then write an essay in which you discuss how such elements as figurative language, imagery, diction, and point of view reveal the poet’s attitude toward the subject of marriage. Note: Try NOT to reword the prompt. DO answer the questions of the prompt in the thesis. Thesis 1: In George Meredith’s “Modern Love,” the poet reveals his attitude toward marriage through figurative language, imagery, and diction. 1) the SUBJECT: George Meredith’s “Modern Love” 2) the writer’s opinion: One of the key elements of a thesis is MISSING; there is no opinion given. This thesis simply restates the writing prompt. Thesis 2: In George Meredith’s “Modern Love,” the poet’s cynical attitude toward marriage is revealed through dark and ominous language. 2) the writer’s opinion: The reader knows that the writer believes that the poet’s attitude is cynical and that the language the poet uses is dark and ominous.
20
In order to write a thematic statement you must have
a SUBJECT (an abstract thematic idea) and your understanding of the author’s opinion on that subject Take the SUBJECT (an abstract idea) explored in a piece of literature and make an assertion about what the author tries to convey to the reader about this subject through the text. The purpose of the thematic statement is to clearly and concisely state the meaning of the work as a whole.
21
Example of Thematic The thematic statement is best used in the conclusion to provide an overarching last thought for the audience. 1) the SUBJECT: Marriage (modern love) 2) the writer’s understanding of the author’s opinion: George Meredith believes that marriage is an outdated and miserable condition that can be ended only by death. (Turn the bolded part of the sentence into a thematic statement.) Thematic statement: Modern love creates misery for those involved in it and is only escapable by death.
22
Now write your own Thesis & Thematic Statement
A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole. Do not merely summarize the plot. Please note: you must have your opinion in the thesis and the author’s opinion in the thematic.
23
Example of Thesis Note: Try NOT to reword the prompt. DO answer the questions of the prompt in the thesis. Thesis 1: In the play Macbeth by Williams Shakespeare he utilizes Lady Macbeth as a symbol of masculinity both ironically and in efforts to establish the growing conflict of a mans fate.

Element of the Absurd in Waiting for Godot Model
Where is the topic sentence? The elements of the Theatre of the Absurd genre are exemplified through the comically irrational yet devastatingly real world created in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot. As they wait to meet with Mr. Godot, the main characters, Estragon and Vladimir lack the focus and motivation traditionally seen in a story. Estrogon’s train of thought jumps aimlessly from “Embrace me!...You stink of Garlic” to “Let’s hang ourselves immediately.” His inability to retain focus past a few lines in the script falls in line with the characteristics of an Absurdist drama. Furthermore, their discussion of suicide and how “Gogo light- bough not break – Gogo dead. Didi Heavy - bough break – Didi alone” illuminates the dire predicament of these two individuals. They are unable to cope with their current circumstance and lightly jest as they contemplate taking their lives. As Shakespeare said, “in jest, there is truth,” likewise is there truth in Beckett’s satirical commentary on the bleak and vast emptiness of living without purpose. Where are the embedded Quotes with context? Where are the explanation of the quotes? Where is the summative sentence?
