Tensions Rise Powers want to protect status
Compete overseas for colonies, this influenced a military build up. Militarism or glorification of the military was strong, young men had a romantic view of war Britain feels threatened by Germany, and Germany fears Russia.

Nationalism was fueling fears of rebellion In 1912 The Balkan States broke away from Turkey By 1913 the Balkan Wars began creating a very tense situation in Europe By 1914 the Balkan States were the “powder keg of Europe” ready to explode.

The War Begins Archduke Francis Ferdinand was assassinated by Serbian nationalists Austria gives Serbia an ultimatum- last set of demands to avoid a war end all anti-Austrian agitation, punish any Serbian official involved in murder plot, and let Austria do an investigation

With German support, Austria declares war on Serbia Russia mobilizes, and Germany declares war on Russia France supports Russia; Germany declares war on France

Germany invades Belgium to invade France and swing south behind their lines Due to Germany invading Belgium, Britain declares war on Germany Once the machinery of war was set in motion, it seemed impossible to stop.

Reaction to the War Before the War many countries were troubled domestically Britain struggled with labor unrest and the issue of home rule in Ireland Russia still dealing with the problems stirred by Revolution in 1905 Instead of division, war brought a renewed sense of patriotism
