exposition—what others (the author) say about the character in the introduction 2. description—what other characters or the narrator says about him within the story 3. dialogue—what the character says 4. action—what the character does

flat character one-dimensional; not much individualizing detail (Jim’s Father) little background (minor character) 2. round character multifaceted; hard to define (Jim; Long John Silver) reveal their actions, and often their thoughts (usually a major character)
