About the article Written by Richard T. Wright and Dorothy Boorse (13th Edition)
4
Forms of energy
5
naturally replenished on a human timescale
Energy consumption naturally replenished on a human timescale
6
1. Geothermal energy
7
Distribution in the U.S.
8
What geothermal energy can be used for?
Electric power generation
9
What geothermal energy can be used for?
Geothermal heat pumps
10
2. Tidal power
11
How to exploit this energy?
Tidal barrage
12
Impact on the environment
Trap sediments Impede the migration of fish and other organisms Prevent navigation Alter the circulation and mixing of saltwater and freshwater in estuaries
13
3. Ocean waves
14
Buoys to generate electricity
15
4. Ocean thermal-energy conversion
16
4. Ocean thermal-energy conversion

My comments Geothermal sites may contain some poisonous gases that can be released to the air. Excessive usage of tidal power originated from universal gravitation from the moon and the sun may influence the earth’s orbit. … The nuclear fusion energy option is an ultimate solution to global warming and energy problem.
18
Question 1 What’s the type of the energy the author mentioned?
1. Geothermal energy 2. Tidal power 3. Ocean waves 4. Ocean thermal-energy
19
Question 2 The author’s primary purpose is to
explain the importance of reducing the use of fossil fuels. identify factors that contribute to global climate changes. suggest ways to improve energy conservation and efficiency. describe a variety of renewable-energy options
20
Question 3 The term tidal barrage describes a system in which
turbines are mounted in a dam bulit across the mouth of a bay. toles are drilled several miles deep inte granite. the warm surface water of the ocean is used to vaporize a low boiling-point liquid. cold, nutrient-rich water is pumped from the ocean bottom.
21
Question 4 The overall pattern of organization in this selection is
listing. caues and effect. comparison and contrast. order of importance.
22
Question 5 The tone of the selection can best be described as
informative. pessimistic. amused. sensational.
23
Question 6 The title of this selection implies that
the renewable-energy options in this selection are unlikely to succeed. solar and wind energy are the only realistic options for renewable energy. there are other renewable-energy options in addition to the ones described in this selection. the public prefers to continue using gasoline and other fossil fuels rather than renewable-energy options.
