Warm up #23 If energy can’t be created, what is the original source of energy that powers our cars, heats our homes, grows our grass, and feeds us?
2
Lesson 3: Energy Resources
3
Essential questions What are nonrenewable energy resources?
What are renewable energy resources? Why is it important to conserve energy?
4
Sources of energy Almost all energy can be traced back to the Sun
Most of the energy that we use comes from electric energy from electric power plants
5
Nonrenewable energy resources
An energy resource that is available in limited amounts or that is used faster than it is replaced in nature Fossil fuels – the remains of ancient organisms that can be burned as an energy source Takes millions of years to form 3 types: coal, natural gas, and petroleum How has this contributed to global warming?
6
Renewable energy resources
An energy resource that is replaced as fast as, or faster than, it is used Ex. Hydroelectric power, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy, biomass Inexhaustible energy resource – an energy resource that can’t be used up Solar energy, wind energy
7
Conserving Energy resources
We need to conserve energy to reduce rate at which all energy resources are used, which includes not wasting it No matter what type of energy we use, there are advantages and disadvantages to using it
8
