Mrs. Whitney’s Sun Foldable
The Sun Mrs. Whitney’s Sun Foldable
2
Title of Foldable: The Active Sun Put this at the very top along with your name, leave room to draw layers
3
Solar Layers 1st Flap under the title : draw the layers of the outer part of the sun and label. Include the temperature
4
2nd Flap Title: Solar Features
Top Inside: Four visible features of the sun Sun spots Prominences Solar flares Solar wind
5
Use the link at the bottom of the page to read about the sun
Use the link at the bottom of the page to read about the sun. Write the following in your 2nd Flap Bottom layer of the foldable Officially, the sun is classified as a ________ type star, based on its temperature and the _____________ or ______________ of light that it emits. All of the major features of the sun can be explained by the_________ ___________ that produce its energy, by the __________ _________ resulting from the movements of the gas and by its immense __________.
6
Third Layer Title: Solar Events
Top Inside of Flap, copy: The chromosphere is a transition to the outer halo of the Sun, the corona (Latin for “crown”). (visible during a solar eclipse). The corona is powered by solar magnetism. Temperature ~ 1,000,000 K
7
Third flap, Bottom Fold Define an aroura borealis, a solar storm and a solar eclipse Draw one of these events
8
Sunspots Forth Title: SunSpots
Inside Flap, top part, copy: Sunspots are darkened areas of the Sun. They tend to appear in pairs, and the pairs are in groups or centers of activity. The sunspot cycle is about 11 years. Sizes range from 20,000 km or more in diameter. They produce their own magnetic field.
9
Sunspots 4th layer Bottom
Sunspots have two distinct parts: dark, central umbras and surrounding lighter penumbras. Umbras have temperatures of about 4,500 K and appear darker than the surrounding photosphere. Draw this sunspot and Label parts
10
Origin of the Solar Cycle Bottom of 4th layer
Write this stuff Draw this picture Convection and motion stirred up by the rotation cause electrified matter to circulate, creating a solar dynamo that generates the dipole magnetic field.
11
Solar Phenomena, read just for fun
The solar limb displays several sheets of chromospheric gas, or prominences, that can extend tens to hundreds of thousands of km into space.
12
Solar phenomena read just for fun
Spectroheliograms occasionally reveal a much more violent phenomenon, a sudden explosive brightening or flare in the space between a spot pair. Can last from a minute to encompass a whole activity center and have temperature of up to 20 million K. Most of their energy is emitted in the X-ray spectrum.
13
The Fate of the Sun On the back
Read and describe what will happen to the sun eventually
