1 How do Plants Make Their Own Food?
Day 1: An Introduction to Photosynthesis How do Plants Make Their Own Food?

2 Think About It Essential Question
Many people claim they talk to their houseplants. They do this because they think it helps their plants grow and remain healthy. What do you think? Explain your answer.

3 What are we learning today?
Benchmarks: SC.912.L.14.7* SC.912.L.18.7-Identify the reactants, products, and basic functions of photosynthesis. Objectives: I will state the overall equation of photosynthesis. I will describe the factors that affect photosynthesis.

5 What Is Photosynthesis?
Comes from the Greek words: photo - light synthesis - putting together Therefore, it means “using light to put something together” During photosynthesis, plants use the energy from sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into carbohydrates and oxygen. The energy is now STORED in the carbohydrate (STARCH) molecule. Explain the equation Reactants vs products Needs vs makes Explain LIMITING FACTORS to preface lab Take away light source, no photosyn.

6 What is Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the conversion of Solar Energy (Light Energy) into a chemical energy Photosynthesis is the process in which plants are able to make their own food.

7 Chemical Formula Reactants → Products
Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light → C6H12O6 + 6O2 (Carbon Dioxide) + (Water) + Light > (Sugar- Glucose)+ (Oxygen) Cellular Respiration: C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP What are the reactants and products of Photosynthesis? Ask students if they notice any similarities or differences between the two products. Point out the reactants and products in each What are the reactants and products of Cellular Respiration?

8 Photosynthesis: 6CO2 + 6H2O + Light → C6H12O6 + 6O2

9

10 This is Photosynthesis
WHAT’S HAPPENING? Solar energy (Light Energy) Chemical Energy (Glucose- Sugar) This is Photosynthesis

11 Where does Photosynthesis Occur?
Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplast of each cell of photosynthetic autotrophs. Which Kingdoms would you expect to find these type of organisms? Three kingdoms: Protists (Algae) Plants Some Bacteria

12 Chloroplast Function of chloroplast: Carries out photosynthesis
Chloroplasts contain a magic compound, chlorophyll, that can absorb sunlight and start the whole process

13 Student, predict what else could glucose could be used for in a plant ?
Student, can you add to what previous student said? Student, do you challenge or support previous student responses?

14 Glucose (organic compound) is also used to build up the plant’s body cells
Plants are taking carbon dioxide (gas) from the air and using it to create solid material that they need to build their body structures By making a lot of photosynthesis plants are able to produce enough oxygen (O2) to use during cellular respiration and have enough leftovers to oxygenate the environment (so we can also use/breath it)

15 Think About This:  How would leaf size affect the process of photosynthesis?   What could possibly happen if there was limited CO2 absorbed by a plant?

16 Check For Understanding
Now you should know… What photosynthesis is What the purpose of photosynthesis is Where it happens What the reactants and products are What factors affect it Ask students to answer each question!

17 Vocabulary Dominoes RACE
Match all of the dominoes to the appropriate corresponding tile When complete…call me over

18 Independent Practice You can use your notes.
Work silently and independently. This mean by your self!!!
