The Market… Fortune Magazine (2015) Largest companies in the world Exxon Mobil (2) Chevron (3) Phillips 66 (7) Valero (13) Marathon (25) Dow (48) Conoco Phillips (51) Enterprise (59) Tesoro (77)
3
The Market… For every gallon of crude oil processed in a refinery ~ 2.5 gallons of water are required. A large refinery will process around 10 million gallons of wastewater a day at an annual cost of ~ $40,000,000.00
4
The Market…
5
Overview Review the characteristics of refinery wastewater and unit processes Demonstrate emulsion formation and emulsion breaking Highlight typical applications Briefly review PFD Discuss current market trends and opportunities
6
Typical Applications and Industries
Refinery wastewater Chem & PetroChem High FREE Oil content This flowsheet is typically seen in the following applications: Refinery Wastewater plants Washdown stations: (Places where a process involving oil is washed into a drain ie. Truck wash stops, oil tank cleanout stations etc. This also includes oil tanker ballast washdown stations.) Food & Dairy Chem & PetroChem Any wastewater stream with high FREE oil content. CITGO Lake Charles, LA
8
Oleophilic = Oil Loving
Oil drum skimmer is used to recover the layer of free oil before chemical addition
9
Chemical Addition Add a pinch of coagulant We’re using Alum
This will drop the pH to about 3.7, breaking the emulsion Add a dash of caustic This raises the pH back up prior to adding a flocculant Finish with a touch of polymer to taste Helps aide in flocc formation

HollyFrontier, Utah Located in Salt Lake City vicinity
Competition was Poseidon Communication Understood needs
11
HollyFrontier, Wyoming
Evolved from being a cover only to entire API replacement Shortly after winning Utah job Competition was Poseidon Thought we understood customers needs Their desires didn’t match job in Utah Confused communications Didn’t discover or sell to the decision makers Bid results, lessons learned
12
Chevron Phillips, Texas
Application, not typical Original budget $400k, actual sale price $1.2M Bid to spec and communicated need for changes, capitalized on customer driven changes.
