1 PP Lessons Term 4, 2016 Week 6

2 Practising our ABCs WALT: Practise using the ABC model to think about different events in our lives. WILF: A= I can identify the adversity B= I can identify my beliefs and thinking about a certain situation (self talk) C= I can recognise the consequence of the reaction in a situation. This is caused by my belief. Slide 2 Read WALT and WILF

3 What is ABC? A – Is the adversity or negative event that takes place. (A problem) B – the beliefs and interpretations about the event/adversity (What our mind is telling us) C – is the consequences and how we feel and behave following the adversity. (What will happen now? What will you do?) Using the ABC model helps us to try and look on the bright side in any situation. We can learn to recognise negative beliefs (unhelpful thoughts) and try to change them to more optimistic (helpful) thoughts. This will help us to cope with any adversity (a problme) we may face. Slide 3 Read: A – Is the adversity or negative event that takes place. B – the beliefs and interpretations about the event/adversity. C – is the consequences and how you feel and behave following the adversity. Using the ABC model helps us to try and look on the bright side in any situation. This will help us cope with any adversity we may face.

4 Using your ABCs Look at each picture to identify the Adversity- The Problem, Belief – What the person is thinking, and Consequence – what will happen now? Can you think of a more helpful way of thinking? Create a response chart with your teacher. Slide 4 Discuss images first and complete one as a whole class. Students can then work by themselves or in pairs to complete the 3 remaining picture. First picture Adversity: Boy doesn’t want to read anymore Belief: Positive- I’m already halfway through Negative: I’ve got so much more to read Consequence : Positive- If I keep reading I get it finished faster Negative: I’m so sick of reading, I’m never reading again

5 RESPONSE CHART – Have a o with the teacher first then work in pairs to complete the activity sheet.
Adversity – What is the problem Belief – What is the person thinking? Consequence – What could happen because of the thinking? Can you come up with a better way to fix the problem?

6 Pete the Cat using the ABC Model
Watch the video and discuss What adversities (problems) did we see in the video? What did Pete the Cat teach us to do when we are faced with a problem? What would be the consequences of unhelpful thinking? What were the consequences of helpful thinking? Slide 5 Discuss the group task

7 Role Play In groups of 4 choose an adversity to role play.
Student 1 – Acts out/explains the adversity Student 2 – Acts as the helpful inner voice Student 3 – Acts as the unhelpful inner voice Student 4 – Decides which inner voice to listen to and why, explaining the consequence of that belief. Slide 5 Discuss the group task

8 Today we have looked at:
