1 WARM-UP 2/2/15 Write down a chemical equation that would show the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). If copper mixed with silver nitrate (AgNO3), what type of reaction would this be? What products would you expect? Stamping in seven minutes.

2 To identify types of chemical reactions in the lab.
2/2/15 Objective To identify types of chemical reactions in the lab. 2/2/15 Agenda Recap Friday Warm-Up Lab Intro Lab Clean-up

4 WARM-UP 2/2/15 Write down a chemical equation that would show the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). If copper mixed with silver nitrate (AgNO3), what type of reaction would this be? What products would you expect? Stamping in seven minutes.

5 What’s the purpose? Intro to Lab from Last Week
Make sure you have the correct changes in Materials and Chemicals. Perform Experiments 1 and 2 as is on the paper. Use test tube instead of beaker. Will get instructions on Experiment 3.

6 Intro to Lab For each experiment, make sure to leave space to answer the questions from the “In your lab book” section in the packet. Make sure to write down the steps as you do them into your notebook. No more than three per group.

7 SAFETY! Remove all food and drink away from chemicals.
Keep chemicals in the back of the room for everyone to use. Wear lab goggles OVER YOUR EYES! If any chemical gets onto your skin, run it under water for 5-10 minutes.

8 For Chemicals, write down the following:
Manganese dioxide (MnO2) Copper (Cu) 3% hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) 0.10 M sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) 0.10 M lead (II) nitrate Pb(NO3)2 0.10 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) 0.10 M silver nitrate (AgNO3) 0.10 M calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) 0.10 M copper(II) nitrate Cu(NO3)2 0.10 M sodium chloride (NaCl)

9 Experiment 1 - Addition Manganese dioxide (MnO2) is a catalyst.
Take a strip of pH paper and test the product. Tilt the test tube over the waste container. Record the color of the pH paper. Compare it to the container. What pH is the product?

10 Experiment 3 1)Of the chemicals listed with 0.1M, pick two.
0.10 M calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) 0.10 M copper(II) nitrate Cu(NO3)2 0.10 M sodium chloride (NaCl) 0.10 M sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) 0.10 M lead (II) nitrate Pb(NO3)2 0.10 M sodium hydroxide (NaOH) 2) Place 3 mL of each of the two that you chose into a test tube (one pipette = ~1mL). Swirl. Record observations. 3) Repeat four more times (different pairs) for a total of five pairs.

11 Experiment 3 – Analysis What products would you have expected to form for each reaction? Write down the formula and names. Which reactions formed an observable product? Describe what the product looked like.

12 Clean Up Please make sure all the test tubes that you used are rinsed out. All lab packets go back to the front of the room.

13 2/2/15 Homework No homework 
