Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are fun to eat because they always slide around.

2 Another Reminder… I will be staying after school today (TUESDAY) until 3:00 to help you all as you edit your essays. Be there or do not complain about your grade 

3 Expository Essay Writing… COntinued
With Mrs. Thomas

4 Objectives I can write an essay based on expectations established in the TNReady rubric for expository writing.

5 REVIEW What is the “foundation” for a good essay?
What constitutes (makes up) a good thesis statement? How does a thesis statement relate to the rest of an essay?

6 Thesis Statement Analysis

7 Review What question does your thesis statement answer?
Do we usually get our thesis statement right on the first try? Can you go back and change your thesis statement on the state writing assessment?

8 Let’s look at our Thesis statement
Prompt: After reading the passage, write a multiparagraph essay explaining how one’s actions in life affect how one is perceived after death. Sample Thesis Statement: One’s actions in life affect how one is perceived after death because people are remembered based on whether they lived a life characterized by good or evil. Is this the BEST thesis statement possible? Would you score this a 1, 2, 3, or 4? How could we make it better?

9 Let’s try that again… Prompt: Sample Thesis Statement:
After reading the passage, write a multiparagraph essay explaining how one’s actions in life affect how one is perceived after death. Sample Thesis Statement: People will judge you after you die based on whether you were good or evil. Would you score this a 1, 2, 3, or 4? How could we make it better?

10 One more… Prompt: Sample Thesis Statement:
After reading the passage, write a multiparagraph essay explaining how one’s actions in life affect how one is perceived after death. Sample Thesis Statement: A person’s actions throughout their life can effect the way they are perceived after death because people will base one’s memory on whether they use their wealth, influence, and power for good or evil. Would you score this a 1, 2, 3, or 4? How could we make it better?

11 Now what…? If you are not finished with your essay…
Finish writing and ask your teacher for help as you work. Make sure every word you write connects back to your thesis statement, and follow the pattern we have been discussing throughout the year (Introduction—HIT, Body Paragraphs—at least 2, and Conclusion). If you are finished with your first draft… Look back over your essay and make corrections as needed. Ask your teacher for help if there is a component you are not confident about. Get a rubric from Mrs. Thomas’s desk and complete a self-score analysis. If you finish early… Get the essay you scored last Thursday from Mrs. Thomas’s desk and label the components found in the checklist on the back of the handout (this is the part you pinky promised to ignore last week when I told you it was for “another day”…welcome to another day! 
