Waves
3
How does energy travel? Waves transfer energy from one location to another.
4
What causes waves to be different
What causes waves to be different? (Write down a hypothesis in your notebook)
5
What are some different types of waves
What are some different types of waves? (Write down a hypothesis for different waves you know) How are these the same? How are they different?
6
Wave Types Mechanical Waves- waves that require a medium or matter to transfer energy . Transverse Longitudinal Surface Waves
7
Transverse Waves
9
Longitudinal Waves
10
Surface Waves
11
3 Types of Waves
12
Wavelength Distance between crests
13
Frequency How fast or slow the waves are moving.
Measured in Hertz (Hz) Higher the frequency the more energy
14
Amplitude The height of the wave. It is determined by the amount of energy in a wave.
17
Formulas for Waves Speed = Frequency x Wavelength
Wavelength = Speed/Frequency Frequency = Speed/Wavelength
18
Identifying Characteristics of Waves
1. Wavelength 2. Amplitude 3. Frequency 4. Color

Play with slinky’s! While playing with slinky’s, do the following things. Make your slinky have a transverse wave. Draw what that looks like. Make your slinky have a longitudinal wave. Draw what that looks like. Pick a section on your slinky and watch it carefully. Make a transverse wave. Does that section move side to side at all? What does playing with slinky’s teach us about energy and waves?
