Born 1757 on the island of nevis in the Caribbean Father left when he was 8, and his mother died when he was 11 Age 16, someone sponsored him to travel to new York to attend king’s college (which is now Columbia university) Became a lawyer, founded new York’s first bank, and joined the military in 1775
