Partner Activity (5 minutes)
Have students break off into pairs and have each pair take out a piece of paper. Make sure that students are not pairing up with someone they know already! Instructions for pair: Introduce yourself and share three facts about yourself. With your partner, define, in your own words, each of the themes of the conference: Engagement Empowerment Impact Introductions & setting up group discussion (10 minutes) After time is up, regroup and have pairs come to the front and introduce each other (for example, Molly should introduce Chelsea to the group and Chelsea should introduce Molly) and share one fact they learned about their partner as well as one of the theme definitions they constructed together.

After listening to the different definitions of the each conference theme that the students produce, bring them back together in a large group setting. In order to dive in and get the most out of this conference weekend, it is important that students are able to spend adequate time grasping the three themes (engagement, empowerment, and impact) and how they can take ownership of them during the conference as well as in their chapters throughout the school year. Have students break off into small groups to discuss the following questions below. Come back together to discuss as a large group after each themed section. What does being engaged looked like for you this week at conference? (Paying attention during seminars, not texting, attending all sessions, participating in group conversation) What commitment have you made to be here this weekend? Are you missing anything back home? How many students from your chapter are here with you this weekend? How do you engage in the mission in your community? How do you engage your volunteers, families, buddy pairs at home? What hinders you from being engaged? How can your Program Manager support you in this? Photo by JD Hancock - Creative Commons Attribution License Created with Haiku Deck
