Complex sentences with adjective clauses
(page 16 in your notes) The tree that was planted in the yard was decorated. A prize was given to the boy who won the game. I completed the assignment that was given yesterday. My friend who is a freshman works at the store.

I finally met the family that live next door.
The woman that answered the phone scheduled my appointment. The money was from a donor that wishes to remain anonymous. Can you identify the man that stole the items?

PRONOUNS—words that take the
place of nouns. ANTECEDENT—the word, phrase, or clause to which the pronoun refers, understood by the context of the sentence.

What is the antecedent? Mr. Czapla is the principal. He parks in the front row. We saw the movie on Sunday and thought it was really good! The students said that they plan to attend the dance. My grandmother invited the family to her house.

Everyone forgot their homework.
Pronouns and antecedents must agree in NUMBER. Common mistake… Everyone forgot their homework. Everyone (the antecedent) is singular and requires a singular pronoun. Everyone forgot his or her homework. **The indefinite pronouns anybody, anyone, each, either, everybody, everyone, neither, nobody, no one, one, somebody, and someone are SINGULAR.

(following this rule is very similar to what we saw with S/V agreement) Marsha, Jan, and Cindy keep their room nice and clean. Either Martin or George left his AR book in the cafeteria. (NOT their) Each of the girls received a perfect score on her science project. Someone handed in his paper without a name on it.

The sentences below are examples of vague and ambiguous pronoun
references. Although the motorcycle hit the tree, it was not damaged. (Is "it" the motorcycle or the tree?) I don't think they should show violence on TV. (Who are "they"?) Vacation is coming soon, which is nice. (What is nice, the vacation or the fact that it is coming soon?) George worked in a national forest last summer. This may be his life's work. (What word does "this" refer to?) If you put this sheet in your notebook, you can refer to it. (What does "it" refer to, the sheet or your notebook?)
