4 A counterculture is a subculture that rejects key values/beliefs of the broader culture
What’s a current-day counterculture? “Counterculture”

5 Counterculture Movement in 60’s
Young, middle-class movement disappointed with America (baby boomers now teenagers) Turned backs on traditional society Rejected conformity, traditional education/jobs/clothes, etc… Tried to establish new society based on peace and love

6 “Hippie” culture Believed American society was empty
Materialism Technology War “Tune in, turn on, drop out” “Hippie” culture

Sexual freedom Illegal drug use

8 Generational Divide Older generations (parents, grandparents, etc) disapproved of new culture Music- “Music was better in my day,” “This is just noise,” “This music is a bad influence,” etc.. Changing norms- different clothes, protests, values (“free love”), religious freedom = judged and believed downfall of American values

Successes: Title Nine, ban on gender discrimination in education program/activities (sports, colleges) Roe v. Wade, federal law, women have right to choose to have an abortion (until a point) Healthcare issue- when illegal, abortions happened, but were more dangerous States found ways to limit access
