Chapter 3.5 Spanish Colonies on the Borderlands

I. Spanish Florida As others colonies pushed south the Spanish were afraid they may push into Florida To make there colony sound better they spread word that if any slaves made it to Florida from other colonies they would be protected and given land This made Florida’s population grow quickly

II. Settling The Spanish Borderlands
Spain’s most important capitols were in Mexico and South America?? Remember why? The areas north of Mexico were called the borderlands why?? Well they bordered the Frontier which acted as a buffer zone in case they were attacked This was areas like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona

A. Juan de Onate in New Mexico
Spain wanted wealth in their settlements Onate moved north into New Mexico in search of gold, to convert natives, and to settle Onate brought hundreds of horses and settled cattle ranches He also taught natives horse riding. Why could this be bad?

B. Missions in Texas and Arizona
Catholic missions spread to convert Natives? why? They forced natives to attend study groups and live by a set of rules Lead by Father Eusebio Francisco Kino these missions turned into large cities

C. Missions along California Coast
Spain’s California missions were also important Junipero Serra was a mission settled in the San Diego region allowed the Spanish close by set up a city and then continue north to settle more than 20 more missions (expansion)

Presidios and Pueblos With missions set up soldiers soon came to add protection of settlements They set up Presidios or military post as defense They also established Pueblos or civilian towns which acted as centers for farming, trade, and business

III. Life in Spanish Missions
Thousands of natives labored these missions They built churches, roads, and learned the trades Worked long days and only were given Sunday off to study the religion of the Spanish Natives had no control of their lives, if they broke rules they were punished harshly Many were imprisoned kept in shackles, and even whipped for behavior Many also died from poor living conditions, disease and sickness
