Water in the World Comet Bay College Term 3 2015

Welcome Back! This term we will be looking at water, how we use it and why its valuable to us. - We will develop your ideas about and understanding of the environment. - We look at how different people value the environment and water - We look at case studies in Australia, Asia and North Africa. Task – Card Sort

Your Task Using the cards and match a description to a word. What do all these things have in common?

Natural Resources A natural resources is any kind of substance in its natural form which is needed and wanted by humans. What is a natural Resource? The most common categories of natural resources are minerals (such as gold and tin) and energy resources (such as coal and oil). The air, forests and oceans can also be classified as natural resources. Natural resources change in value over time, depending on what a society most needs or considers most valuable.

Renewable or Non-Renewable?
The various types of natural resources are often separated into renewable and non-renewable resources. Your task: Separate the resources into what you think are renewable or non-renewable. How do we categorise them?

Renewable Usually living resources.
They can reproduce or re stock themselves Air and water also renewable. They are part of a cycle that allows them to be reused. Only exist if they are not being used faster then they can replenish themselves.

Non-Renewable Cannot be re-produced or re-grown and are therefore in limited supply Coal is considered a non-renewable resource. It is constantly being formed but too slowly to keep up with demand. Cannot maintain the demands for current human needs while still preserving the ecosystem for future generations.

Your Task Resources are not distributed evenly around the world. They are dependent on specific conditions to form. This means we place different values on different resources depending on where we live and what we have access to. Which resources from the list do you think are most valuable in Australia? You need to explain why you think this.
