The Green Crab Kyle Cholock

The Green Crab The green crab is originally from Australia, South Africa, and South America. It is a small green, red, orange, or yellow crab that is about 3 and a half inches long. The green crab eats a lot of different things. They are omnivores, so they eat both plants and animals. Most of what they eat are, mussels, clams, snails, barnacles and algae. They can live up to 80 days.

How It Got Here It got here by stowing away in the hulls of ships.

Where in Canada The Green Crab now lives just off the coast of Newfoundland, and all the way down the coast of North America.

The Canadian Ecosystem Before
Before the Green Crab came to Canada, the Canadian ecosystem was rich in a majority of marine life, with lots of different kinds of mussels, clams, and snails.

Now… Now, the ecosystems off the coast of Canada aren't as close to being as diverse as they once were. Now a lot of the different species of snails and mussels are dying off. Taking them out of the ecosystem could have a dramatic effect on the entire ecosystem. Taking away one thing, takes away food from a lot of different animals.

The ecosystem is less diverse because they Crab as wiped out a lot of the snails, clams, and mussel population. If it keeps going at this rate, there will be no more mussles, clams or snails in the coastal Canadian ecosystem.

Solution I think that the best solution is to slow down on the fishing of mussels and clams, because if you take less out, there will be more there to reproduce, which would continue the species for longer. Also they could catch some more of the Green Crabs, and put them in aquariums, or bring them back to there natural habitat.
