The Spread of Islam:In a short hundred years after the death of Mohammed Islam had become the worlds fastest growing religion. It expanded east as far as modern day Pakistan, west towards Morocco, and north to Turkey and Spain. It was spread by Muslim armies who conquered and converted as they blitzed to capture wealth and land. This aggression was not stopped until the French army defeated the Muslims in Northern Spain.

Morocco: Morocco, also known as the Barbary coast during the 15th and 16th century (because of the Berbers that lived there) was conquered by Turkish pirates, under the commission of the Ottoman Empire. This new state became a protectorate of the Ottoman empire. Piracy became the primary economic support of this empire until the French invaded as a result of increased piracy.

Algeria: Originally part of the Carthaginian empire. Algeria was also conquered by the Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines until 647 A.D. when Arabs arrived in Algeria and converted the local Berbers to Islam. They were under constant rule by various Muslim dynasties until 1518 when the Ottomans made them a protectorate state during their rivalry with the Spanish. The Ottomans were in control for over 300 years until 1830 when the French colonized the country.

Tunisia: Originally settled by the Phoenicians, the modern capital of Tunis was once the city of Carthage. The Romans, Vandals, and Byzantines held Tunisia following the Carthaginians until the 7th century when it was conquered by Arabs. The local Berber population was converted to Islam and the area became Ifriqiya. Dynasties of Tunisia include the Aghlabids in the 9th century, the Zirids in 972, and Berbers who followed the Fatimids. The Norman conquest of Tunisia was a break in Muslim rule, however in 1159 the Almohads reconquered the country. With the final dynasty until European colonization being the Hafsids.
