Film: Cinema Release Question: What factors need to be considered when releasing a film at the cinema?

4 Film: Cinema Release The distributor has to make the important decision of which cinemas the movie should be exhibited in. The Introduction of ‘Multiplex Cinemas’ has increased the popularity & viewing options of cinema. The distributer has many factors to consider when deciding what film is played where: Location Number of screens Number of cinemas close by (Competition) Local target audience Public transport & parking Film content

5 Film: Cinema Release Another very important decision that a distributor must decided on, is whether the film should be exhibited at an Art House Cinema or a Mainstream Cinema. Such a decision depends on the content of the film and its intended audience: Foreign Language (Subtitles) International film Niche Audience The introduction of Digital cinema will revolutionise cinema viewing. It follows a much quicker process than standard film, and gives more options for the viewing public (sports/concerts/TV etc).

6 Film: Cinema Release In today's market consumers have more choice & variety for their cinema viewing experience than ever before. The introduction of new technologies & technological convergence, has allowed production companies & distributors to exhibit their films on more than one level. 3D first appeared in cinemas during the 80’s. Recently it has made a comeback thanks to films such as James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’, which was shot using 3D cameras. IMAX technology boasts an image surface ten times the size of normal film. The highest screen resolution in the world, the immersive image offers audiences an “experience” unlike conventional theatrical venues.

Film: Home Release Question: What factors need to be considered when releasing a film in the home?

8 Film: Home Release A theatrical release can be played at selected cinemas from anything between 2 weeks to 2 months. 18 weeks after the cinema release date, the film is packaged & released for home viewing. It is still the job of the distributor to organize this, with all rights for home viewing sold worldwide (in the same way as cinema distribution). Any profits made from home viewing sales are divided between the distributor and the production company.

9 Film: Home Release The growth of home cinema viewing technology, & the convergence of different medium, has resulted in numerous ways for audiences to consume film at home. Recent technologies have enabled movies to be released on a number of different formats: DVD Blu-Ray Download The most recent technologies to hit the high streets & change the home cinema experience, is the return of 3D movies & 3D home video systems. Home cinema experience is an ever changing market.

10 Question: What determines a film to be successful... or not?

11 Success Film: After the film is exhibited, it is make or break time!
It is at this stage that: Production Companies assess their financial risk taken.. Distributors see if their hard work & time has paid off.. The film is revealed as either a success.. or a flop. Audiences have flocked to the cinemas, purchased their tickets, and watched the feature… So what makes a film a success?

12 Film: Success The amount of success a film achieves comes down to how much money it takes at the worldwide box office Ticket sales are counted & recorded to determine whether or not the film is financially successful. Some film institutions have actually gone out of business due to their movie being a flop at the box office.
