Cellular Respiration and Fermentation
Chapter 9 Cellular Respiration and Fermentation
2
Organisms get energy from food
Energy in food measured in calories Calorie = amount of energy needed to raise the temp. of 1 gram of water 1o C Unit Calorie = 1 kilocalorie (1000 calories) Energy released as heat and chemical energy
4
Cellular Respiration = process that releases energy from food in the presence of oxygen C6H12O6 + 6O2 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy Release energy a little bit at a time in the form of ATP
6
Step 1- Glycolysis Glycolysis = breaking down of glucose
Occurs in cytoplasm Is anaerobic
7
Glucose 2 molecules of pyruvate also produces 2 NADH Uses 2 ATP Makes 4 ATP Net profit of ATP = 2 ATP
9
Step 2 - Fermentation or oxidative respiration
If anaerobic, fermentation If aerobic, oxidative respiration
10
Oxidative Respiration
occurs in mitochondria 2 steps - Krebs cycle - Electron transport chain
