CASE tools Along with HCI, it is a core subject for the Software Engineering option of FT225/4. This subject is examined in a 3-hour exam at the end of the year. There are 8 questions on the paper, of which each student must answer 2 CASE, 2 HCI.

CASE tools part This takes up half of the academic year.
It is split up into three distinct sessions. Monday, 2 hour lab session. Tuesday, 1 hour lecture on Theory. Thursday, 1 hour lecture on tools and techniques. There is a task to be completed as part of the CASE tools course. Lecture notes are available on

Purpose of the course To provide you with OO analysis and design skills. To look at moving on from legacy situations. Enterprise level solutions. Round-trip engineering. Choosing the best process model / methodology / tool for the task in hand.

Prerequisites Knowledge of a methodology that is consistent with the traditional waterfall process model – e.g. SSADM. Programming practice in an object-oriented language such as C++ or Java.

Topics Models, Methodologies and tools. Enterprise Resource Planners.
Legacy system evaluation. Learning from the past – patterns. Reverse Engineering or Refactoring. Practical knowledge of tools to model. Classes, transitions, Use Cases, Process threads. Code generation and reverse engineering.

Practical class Implementation of techniques through
Rational Rose Some assigned work may be theoretical. Choose based on the type of project you want to do.
