6 Application Problem: Alex squeezed 2 liters of juice for breakfast. If he pours the juice equally into 5 glasses, how many liters of juice will be in each glass? (Bonus: How many milliliters are in each glass?) 5 units = 2 L 1 unit = 2 Γ· 5 = L ? 5 units = 2,000 mL 1 unit = 2,000 Γ· 5 = 400 mL 2 liters = 2,000 mL 2 5 L juice will be in each glass. 400 mL juice will be in each glass.

7 Concept Development Let’s think back on what we learned about adding in third grade. What is 3 adults plus 4 adults? 3 adults + 4 adults = 7 adults We can add 1 fourth plus 1 fourth because the units are the same. 1 fourth + 1 fourth = 2 fourths = 2 4 What is 5 children plus 8 adults? 5 children + 8 adults = We can’t add children and adults.

8 Concept Development Why is that? Talk to your tablemates about that.
Children and adults are not the same unit. We would need to have like units before we added. What do children and adults have in common? They are people. Let’s add people, not children and adults. Say the addition sentence with people. 5 people + 8 people = 13 people 5 children + 8 adults = 5 people + 8 people = 13 people We could also add 5 ones plus 8 ones, which equals? 13 ones

9 Concept Development – Problem 1:
Can I add 1 half plus 1 fourth? Discuss with your table. = We cannot add 1 half plus 1 fourth until the units are the same. We need to find like units. Let’s first do that by folding paper. Fold paper vertically in half. Clarify the 2 units. Fold the same paper horizontally in fourths. Clarify the 4 units. Draw a line at the fold of the half. Clarify that Β½ is also Draw a line at the folds of the fourths. Clarify that ΒΌ is also 2 8.

Now let’s do the same process by drawing. When I make 1 hole into smaller units of Β½ each, how many units will I have? 2 units One half tells me to select how many of the 2 units? One

Let’s label our unit with Β½ and shade in one part. Now let’s draw another rectangle. How many parts do I need to make it show fourths? Four One-fourth tells me to show how many units? One Let’s label our unit with ΒΌ and shade in one part. Now let’s make our drawing show the same size units. (Draw horizontal lines on the Β½ model and 1 vertical line on the ΒΌ model.) How many units does each model have now? Eight How many shaded units are in Β½?

We have 4 shaded units out of 8 total units. How many units are on the ΒΌ model? Two There are 2 shaded parts out of 8 total parts. Are our models now showing like units? Yes, our models are showing units of 8. Say the addition sentence now using eighths as the common denominator. 4 eighths + 2 eighths = 6 eighths We can make larger units within How can we do that? Can I add these two fractions together? Discuss this problem with your table. First we have to find like units. Do our units get bigger or smaller when we create like units? There are more units so the units get smaller. The units get smaller because it is the same amount of space but more parts. Let’s draw a diagram to help solve this problem.

Did the half become 3 smaller units and each third become two smaller units? Yes. Tell me the addition sentence. 2 sixths + 3 sixths = 5 sixths. = = 5 6

When we partition a rectangle into thirds, how many units will we have in all? 3 How many of those units are we selecting? 2 To show 1 fourth, how many units will we draw? 4 How many total units does this new rectangle have? Let’s make these units the same size. What is the fractional value of 1 unit? 1 twelfth How many twelfths are equal to 2 thirds? 8 twelfths How many twelfths are equal to ΒΌ? 3 twelfths Say the addition sentence now using twelfths as our like denominator.

With your table, review the process we used to solve the previous problems. Solve this problem by drawing a rectangle for each of the above fractions.
