1 The Thirteen Colonies Founders Portrait

2 Virginia Established in 1607. Founded by John Smith.
Part of the Southern colonies. Established because of England’s desire to gain wealth and to convert the natives to Christianity.

3 Massachusetts Established in 1620. Founded by the Pilgrims (Puritans).
Part of the New England colonies. Established because Puritans wanted to religious freedom from England. Sailed to the New World on the Mayflower

4 New Hampshire Established in 1623. Founded by John Mason.
Part of the New England colonies. Land was granted Mason. Mason sent settlers to establish a fishing village.

5 Maryland Established in 1634.
Founded by Cecilius Calvert (Lord Baltimore). Part of the Southern colonies. Established to offer refuge for Roman Catholics who were being persecuted in England. The colony was also used to generate profit.

6 Rhode Island Established in 1636. Founded by Roger Williams.
Part of the New England Colonies. Founded when Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay colony for his view on religion. Wanted his own colony for people to have freedom of religion.

7 Delaware Established in 1636. Founded by Peter Minuit.
Part of the Middle colonies. Was established as a place for trade and agriculture.

8 Connecticut Established in 1636. Founded by Thomas Hooker.
Part of the New England colonies. Established because of religious freedom.

9 North Carolina Established in 1653. Founded by Virginia colonist.
Part of the Southern colonies. Established when eight noblemen were issued a royal charter by King Charles II to settle a new colony

10 South Carolina Established in 1663. Founded by Virginia colonist.
Part of the Southern colonies. Established when eight noblemen were issued a royal charter by King Charles II to settle a new colony. In 1712, the colony was separated.

11 New York Established in 1664. Founded by the Duke of York.
Part of the Middle Colonies. Established when the Duke of York received control of New Netherlands. It was renamed New York in his honor.

12 New Jersey Established in 1664.
Founded by Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret. Part of the Middle colonies. Was established when Duke of York received control of land from the New Netherlands. He granted it to Berkeley and Carteret. The two promised settlers representative government and freedom of religion.

13 Pennsylvania Established in 1681. Founded by William Penn.
Part of the Middle colonies. Established to provide a safe haven for Quakers who were persecuted. Penn was granted the land by England in order to pay a debt owed to Penn’s father.

14 Georgia Established in 1732. Founded by James Oglethorpe.
Part of the Southern colonies. Established to give debtors a fresh new start and to serve as a barrier against Spanish expansion.
