Pennsylvania: as a payment to William Penn – Proprietary Georgia: formed last as a place for poor people/buffer against Spanish – Royal All were British, but all developed their own governments

British Subjects Had to follow British laws/pay British taxes
Rarely enforced Workers in cities (Boston, New York, Philly, etc.) Farmers (rich planters in the South, also small scale poor ones in the “west” and NE) Immigrants

Slaves All colonies had them
In some ways, the colonies helped make slavery possible They worked farms, plantations, and as servants Some famous Founding Fathers owned slaves

Native Americans Had different relationships with different colonies
Some were organized politically (Iroquois Confederacy) Source of trade for colonies Source of problems for colonies
