2 U.S.S. Maine U.S.S. Maine explodes in Havana Harbor
Report of U.S. Naval Court of Inquiry finds U.S.S. Maine explosion caused by a mine. The United States Government issued an ultimatum to the Spanish Government to terminate its presence in Cuba. Spain did not accept the ultimatum in its reply of April 1, 1898

The United States Government issued an ultimatum to the Spanish Government to terminate its presence in Cuba. Spain did not accept the ultimatum in its reply of April 1, 1898 The Spanish Government considered the U.S. Joint Resolution a declaration of war. War was formally declared between Spain and the United States April 25, 1898

5 War in the Philippines U.S. Navy's Asiatic Squadron under Commodore Dewey defeats the Spanish Pacific Squadron at the Battle of Manila Bay. Emilio Aguinaldo returned to Manila, the Philippine Islands, from exile in Hong Kong. The United States had invited him back from exile, hoping that Aguinaldo would rally the Filipinos against the Spanish colonial government.

6 War In Cuba Naval battle of Santiago was a strong American win against Spain The Rough riders regiment proved its worth and truly lived up to all of the publicity it had already received. For his efforts to lead in the assault at Kettle and San Juan hills, Roosevelt would eventually be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor

7 Treaty of Paris Spain agreed to remove all soldiers from Cuba and recognize American occupation of the area; the U.S. had previously pledged not to annex the island in the Teller Amendment. Spain ceded Guam and Puerto Rico to the United States. The United States compensated Spain for its losses with a payment of $20 million in return for the rights to the Philippines.
