BAY OF PIGS Cuba falls to communism in late 1950s April 17, 1961 – invasion on North Cuban coast to try and overthrow Castro/Communism CIA had trained anti-Castro supporters in secret Guerilla camps Kennedy refuses to back up invasion with air power, and invaders are tortured and killed Destroyed credibility with rest of Latin America Castro reins supreme and makes pact with USSR!

LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON ‘Great Society’ programs meant to improve education, lower poverty, civil rights legislation…GREAT economy of 1950s and early 1960s supported funding Problem, involvement in Vietnam escalates Congress was not as supportive with LBJ as with JFK because they felt it might cost them their seats Some say Great Society gives government too much authority and spends too much money

HUD – low income housing established Water and Air Conservation Warren Courts – protect rights of accused Miranda v. Arizona “Miranda rights” Gideon v. Wainwright right to an attorney Federal Aid to Public Schools, especially in South Immigration Act – increases number of people allowed with preferences to refugees AND those in danger of genocide Alliance for Progress – aid to Latin American governments Americans begin to complain there is too much money being spent on the poor and minorities, but LBJ is seen as defender of democracy…for now
