My role Acting Manager of Sustainable Campus Design for 3 months
Substantive role is managing building projects at Southbank Campus including some of UoM’s first Design and As-built Green Star projects (refurbished Stables building and New Conservatorium) Managed delivery of Burnley Green Roof project in 2014 Focusing on a number of initiatives while in the role

Design Standards update
A major update to the University’s design standards – a set of principles and specifications that guide our design consultants The Design Standards provide a critical connection between the University’s strategic objectives and the built form that assists in delivering those objectives Includes a chapter on Sustainable Design: Heath and well being of people in buildings Efficiency of building plant A set of sustainable design principles to be adopted for all building projects (the vast majority do not seek formal Green Star certification) Design spaces in a way that ensures an ability to be adapted and repurposed in the future

Parkville Integrated Water Management Plan / Elizabeth St Catchment
An Integrated Water Management Plan that considers all parts of the water cycle at the Parkville campus Relates to the Elisabeth Street Catchment Management Plan by City of Melbourne and how we can help mitigate flood risk to the CBD (that catchment originates at the campus) I will facilitate identification of stormwater opportunities between City of Melbourne and Student Precinct and MSE projects using the Lincoln Square project (stormwater detention and rainwater harvesting) as a precedent

Building materials reuse initiative
Opportunities to reuse building materials present themselves at UoM on a regular basis given the volume of building works we engage in (ranging from refurbishments and landscaping works to whole building demolition). See a process put in place whereby building materials reuse is encouraged and supported Furniture Reuse Program is a shining light There have been successful instances of projects where we have achieved good outcomes in relation to building materials reuse but it has been ad-hoc The upcoming demolition of Building 878 at Southbank Campus will be used a case study to (hopefully) demonstrate the opportunities when the issue is a considered in a systematic way

Waste Management Strategy
Up to 40% of the main Parkville Campus (excluding the sporting facilities) is subject to redevelopment (Student Precinct, MSE, Medical precinct) from now until c.2028 A unique opportunity to think about how the campus will function in future – this includes how we manage our waste Working with Judith Alcorn to consider an overarching strategy that will ensure these developments together work towards meeting the waste objectives we have committed to in the Sustainability Plan and creating a better campus experience Includes both how waste is physically managed (logistics) and some assumptions about what our waste profile might look like in 10 years as we seek to minimise and manage waste in different ways (e.g. organic waste)
