Tasks: These places are the cities of Australian States. Can you identify them? (From left to right: Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Brisbane, Sydney) Q. What makes cities liveable places? What attracts people to live in cities? Access to employment, housing, schools, shops, parks, beaches, What factors do people face when choosing where to live? A. Discuss the features you find important for liveability in your town. If you had a choice to move, which town would you like to live in and why? Task: List the main reasons students came up with in terms of: Accessibility: education, healthcare, employment, leisure centres, transport services, parks, shops, utilities, internet, Demographics: location, family, friends, culture, environment Aesthetics: natural features, town layout, infrastructure Site: land acreage, town block, Stability: people movement, government, crime rate

6 Quality of Life You have just given reasons that contribute to your happiness and wellbeing, your quality of life. Liveability is the qualities of a place, city, town, suburb, or neighbourhood that contributes to the quality of life experienced by those who live or visit there. The quality of life you enjoy will be different for other people. This is called Perspective. Let’s Read: Deciding Where to Live and Choices People Make on page 98 to 101 of our text book

Tasks: Watch the YouTube video: Using tally marks, rank each place in terms of ‘liveability’ out of 10 on the handout sheet Discuss findings Let’s read: Sense of Place on pages 102 – 105 and Liveability of places on pages Watch the video. Which place do you think is the best place to live? Watch again and give each place a "liveability" rating out of 10 (use the hand out sheet to tally marks) Which place ranks highest? Which comes last? What factors did you take into account in rating the different places?

9 What is a ‘Liveable City?
From the lists below select one ‘most liveable’ and one ‘least liveable’ city: Most liveable cities: Sydney, Vancouver, Toronto, Auckland, Helsinki, Vienna, Perth, Bern, New York, Melbourne. Least liveable cities: Dhaka, Tehran, Abidjan, Karachi, Port Moresby, Algiers, Harare, Lagos, Tripoli. Make a power point titled: What makes a city liveable? Set up for Research Task: What is a liveable city?

10 Research 2. Conduct research into the following aspects of liveability for the two cities. Make a slide for each topic. Location. Include country and continent. Population and population density. Natural environment and climate. Law and Order. Is this a safe place? What crime statistics can you find? Economy. What is the average income? Infrastructure. How well is this city serviced with transport and other facilities? Health care. Access to hospitals and doctors. How many doctors per head of population? Education. What education structures are in place? When do children start school? How long do students stay at school? Lifestyle. Recreation, Culture, Entertainment, Sport and other aspects about living in this city. Summary. Write a short summary comparing (similarities) and contrasting (differences) the liveability of the cities you chose Students to begin research, making a slide for each topic. Include headings and sub headings
