I’m from a mixed family that raised me in a big, Midwestern town
I’m from a mixed family that raised me in a big, Midwestern town. I’m from Arabic food and weekends spent at loud, lively cookouts. I’m from American holidays spent exchanging gifts with loved ones. I’m from warm, summer days and long, winter nights. I’m from playing games with my sister in the woods after school. I’m from books. I’m from Harry Potter and To Kill A Mockingbird and the Bible and Pablo Neruda Poetry. I’m from both of my parents, my mom and my dad, and the pain when they divorced. I’m from a long line of Palestinian warriors who resisted when our land was stolen and stayed proud and strong. I’m from confusion, and depression, and grace. But most importantly, I’m from myself, and the way I have loved and carried this body and soul through every storm that comes my way.

As I read the second time…
Answer the following 2 questions in your notebook: What line was the most powerful? Why? What noticings and wonderings do you have about the poem? Write one of each. I notice ____________________________________ I wonder why ____________________________________ (For example: I notice that Ms. Sayyah started each stanza with I’m From) (I wonder why Ms. Sayyah chose to end her poem by saying I’m From Me instead of telling us another example of where she’s from)
