A Special Agreement According to the Hebrew Bible (Hebrew is the language spoken by religious Jews), Abraham received a message from YEHWEH (Yah-Way), which is another name for God. The message commanded Abraham and his wife Sarah to leave Ur and migrate to a place called Canaan, which is in modern Israel; Abraham entered into a covenant, or special agreement, with God. God promised that the land of Canaan would forever belong to those who worshipped him; God also promised to protect Abraham’s tribe and make it prosperous and numerous.

Migration to Egypt Abraham and his descendants lived in Canaan for many years, until the Babylonians attacked them; In 1,600 BCE, there was a terrible hunger or famine in the land of Canaan; The people, who also called themselves Israelites, migrated to Egypt; While there, the Israelites were forced into slavery by the Pharaoh (the Egyptian leader).
