5 A Special Agreement According to the Hebrew Bible (Hebrew is the language spoken by religious Jews), Abraham received a message from YEHWEH (Yah-Way), which is another name for God. The message commanded Abraham and his wife Sarah to leave Ur and migrate to a place called Canaan, which is in modern Israel; Abraham entered into a covenant, or special agreement, with God. God promised that the land of Canaan would forever belong to those who worshipped him; God also promised to protect Abraham’s tribe and make it prosperous and numerous.

6 Migration to Egypt Abraham and his descendants lived in Canaan for many years, until the Babylonians attacked them; In 1,600 BCE, there was a terrible hunger or famine in the land of Canaan; The people, who also called themselves Israelites, migrated to Egypt; While there, the Israelites were forced into slavery by the Pharaoh (the Egyptian leader).
