The Rise of Judaism The people who would come to write the first book of the bible (The Old Testament) were a bronze-age tribe known as Semites; they were led by a man named Abraham; they lived in the city-state of Ur; This tribe was among the first groups to worship one god, which arose from a practice called henotheism (tolerant of many gods, while primarily worshipping one); This practice is called monotheism, meaning one (mono) god (theos), and ism (belief system). This belief system is known as Judaism; today its followers are commonly referred to as Jewish or Jews. In society, the hatred of Jews is called anti-Semitism.

A Special Agreement According to the Hebrew Bible (Hebrew is the language spoken by religious Jews), Abraham received a message from YEHWEH (Yah-Way), which is another name for God. The message commanded Abraham and his wife Sarah to leave Ur and migrate to a place called Canaan, which is in modern Israel; Abraham entered into a covenant, or special agreement, with Abraham. God promised that the land of Canaan would forever belong to those who worshipped him; God also promised to protect Abraham’s tribe and make it prosperous and numerous.
