Agenda Catalyst/Announcements Homework Check Notes: Ionic Compounds with Polyatomic Ions

Polyatomic Ions Poly = many Atomic = made of atoms
A polyatomic ion is a group of atoms that has an overall ionic charge. Some examples of polyatomic ions are NH4+ ammonium OH− hydroxide NO3− nitrate NO2− nitrite CO32− carbonate PO43− phosphate HCO3− hydrogen carbonate (bicarbonate)

Polyatomic Ions to Know
Name Formula Hydronium H3O+ Sulfite SO32- Ammonium NH4+ Nitrate NO3- Hydroxide OH- Nitrite NO2- Phosphate PO43- Chlorate ClO3- Peroxide O22- Chlorite ClO2- Carbonate CO32- Acetate C2H3O2- or CH3COO- Sulfate SO42-
11
Some Names of Polyatomic Ions
The names of some polyatomic anions end in ate. Copy both examples! NO3− nitrate PO43− phosphate If the ion has one fewer oxygen, the name ends in ite. NO2− nitrite PO33− phosphite
12
O S O Polyatomic Ions Why do polyatomic ions have an overall charge? O
The polyatomic ion is drawn with brackets to show the ion is ONE unit O O S O 2- The charge of the polyatomic unit is written outside the bracket The charge is due to the ion having extra electrons Sulfate has 2 extra electrons resulting in a charge of -2
13
Naming Compounds with Polyatomic Ions
The positive ion is named first, followed by the name of the polyatomic ion. NaNO3 sodium nitrate K2SO4 potassium sulfate Fe(HCO3)3 iron(III) bicarbonate or iron(III) hydrogen carbonate (NH4)3PO3 ammonium phosphite
14
Guide for Naming Polyatomic Ions
Identify the cation and anion. Name the cation or the polyatomic list. Name the polyatomic ion WITHOUT changing the name. Write the name of the compound the cation written first and the anion written last.
15
Example Problems Name the following compounds: Na2SO4 Mg(OH)2
Sodium Sulfate Mg(OH)2 Magnesium Hydroxide
