First Battles of the War
The Patriots had a hard start. They were able to win in Boston, defeating the British. But soon after the Patriots were defeated in New York. The Patriots were low on troops and supplies were very low. It seemed as if they would not survive the winter. Although the British were winning the war at this point, Washington saw an opening when he noticed there was a British camp in Trenton, right across the Delaware River. Washington surprised the British camp on Christmas night 1776 at Trenton and then marched straight to Princeton to defeat the British there as well.
