5. Where do you start?
First, have your patron gather the information they already know about the person such as where or when they lived, born or died. Even if they only know approximate information, that is enough to start with. PRESENTER NOTE: if you have a live internet connect and are in the library, you can toggle to the live version

8. Census records. Ancestry has a complete census of US Federal Census records. The Federal Census occurs every two years. For a time, states would conduct their own censuses. Many of these are also listed in Ancestry. In addition Ancestry includes Census records from another of other countries including England, Germany, Canada, and more.

9. Vital records are birth, marriage and death records are a great place to start looking. Especially when you are unsure of an individual’s birth or death date.

10. Military collections include lists of Civil War Soliders, WWI and WWII draft cards, British Army Service Records as well as lists of soldiers killed or wounded in many military actions

11. The Immigration Collection contain passenger lists, passport applications, naturalization records
