African History Vocabulary
SS7H1 - The student will analyze continuity and change in Africa leading to the 21st century. Bell-Ringer – What do you remember about partitioning? How can partitioning cause conflict? Put signed progress reports in work bin!

Partition To divide or break into parts.

Conquest Taking control of a place or people by use of military force.

Colonialism Acquiring full/partial control over another country, filling it with settlers, and using it economically.

Imperialism A policy of extending a country's power and influence through diplomacy or military force.

Nationalism The loyalty to a group with whom one shares a common history, culture, and/or religion.

Pan-African The desire for people of African descent, no matter where they lived in the world, to think of Africa as a homeland.

Apartheid The legal separation (segregation) of races in South Africa.

Africaans/Afrikaners
Language from Dutch and spoken mainly in South Africa; South African ethnic group descended from Dutch settlers. They have traditionally dominated South Africa's politics and agriculture.

Developing Nation A nation where the average income is much lower than in developed nations, where farming is conducted by primitive methods. In many developing nations, rapid population growth threatens the supply of food. Dark Green = Developing Nation

Developed Nation A country that has a highly developed economy and advanced technology compared to other industrial nations.
