1 Secondary Maths Network Meeting Woking
26th January 2016

2 Aims of this session Discuss problem solving strategies to develop resilience Consider challenging aspects of the new GCSE specification Consider the content of the next meeting

3 Ofsted: School inspection handbook
‘Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly should be challenged through being offered rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content.’ ‘enable pupils to solve a variety of mathematical problems, applying the mathematical knowledge and skills they have been taught.’ Criteria for outstanding: ‘Pupils love the challenge of learning and are resilient to failure.’

4 Assessment Objective 3 Solve problems within mathematics and in other contexts Students should be able to: translate problems in mathematical or non-mathematical contexts into a process or a series of mathematical processes make and use connections between different parts of maths interpret results in the context of the given problem evaluate methods used and results obtained evaluate solutions to identify how they may have been affected by assumptions made

5 Problem solving competitions
Problem of the month ed to students/Display board From MEI website

6 Problem Solving resources
Stand alone resources Booklet.pdf

7 Problem Solving resources
Integrated into lessons Create problems based on sample assessment material…

8 Developing resilience
@WHSMaths Mark Eaden Woking High School

9 Developing resilience
Look at the seven problems on the sheet. In groups, discuss what information you would need and what questions you would need to ask the teacher (5-10 minutes)

10 Developing resilience
After the time is up, pupils had to complete the task with no further help. The impact of this on learners was to build resilience and reduce reliance on the teacher.

11 How else can we develop resilience?
Discuss in groups – strategies used, ways the task you have seen could be adapted?

12 Thoughts? Feedback? @WHSMaths

13 Aims of this session Discuss problem solving strategies to develop resilience Consider challenging aspects of the new GCSE specification Consider the content of the next meeting

14 GCSE Higher Specification
Resources for higher content Trigonometry Distance & Velocity – time graphs Other resources

15 Trigonometry Edexcel Specification G21
know the exact values of sin θ and cos θ for θ = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° & 90°; know the exact value of tan θ for θ = 0°, 30°, 45° and 60°

16 Special Values! Use triangle (a) to work out sin 30 = cos 30 =
tan 30 = Use square (b) to work out sin 45 = cos 45 = tan 45 = Use triangle (c) to work out sin 60 = cos 60 = tan 60 = Online demo

17 Trick for remembering? cos tan 0 = 0 tan 30 = 1 3 sin tan 45 = 1
60 sin 45 60 90 90 30 2 tan 0 = 0 tan 30 = tan 45 = 1 tan 60 = 3 3 2 2 1 2 4 2 2

18 Exam Papers Have a go!

19 Resources

20 Resources Starting from √3 on the left hand side, find a route to the opposite side of the rectangle so that each value you land on is equivalent to √3 You may only move one space horizontally or vertically each time – no diagonal moves allowed!

21 Answers

22 Graphs Edexcel Specification A15
calculate or estimate gradients of graphs and areas under graphs (including quadratic and other non-linear graphs), and interpret results in cases such as distance–time graphs, velocity– time graphs and graphs in financial contexts (this does not include calculus)

23 Exam Paper Paper 1 – Edexcel Higher
The car travelled 1.75km in the 100 seconds. Work out the value of V. Describe the acceleration of the car for each part of the journey

24 Resources Standards Units ‘Improving Maths’
A5 Interpreting Distance Time graphs software A6 Interpreting Distance Time graphs. Distance Time & Velocity Time Card Matching
