This Training & development package supports educators R-9 to undertake an investigation of the resources currently provided online in the SACSA website.
It could be used by leaders in schools to deliver training and development to staff about these online resources, or for individual professional learning.

The SACSA website has been online since Over this time resources to support educator’s understanding and implementation of SACSA have been developed and published online.
The intention of these sessions is to also provide a structure for educators to share this information with their staffs in their own sites.

3. What’s in the SACSA website?

Each of the blue tabs on the screen indicate the scope of materials presented on the SACSA website.

This website is a living, changing, one stop shop for South Australian educators. It contains recent articles and documents on current topics and issues, additional reading and links to other websites and current DECS projects.

Today’s session will primarily focus on the Ideas for Practice section of the website. This section provides practical ideas for educators to support the implementation of SACSA within the classroom setting.
Registration into the SACSA website is not required for this session.

4. Ideas for Practice Additional information
The ideas for Practice section of the SACSA website currently contains :
Teaching and Assessing Guides.(TAGs)
These TAGs have been modelled around the principles of constructivist methodology and follow learning models such as: Julie Boyd, Julia Atkin, 4MAT etc.
Insites and Educators’ Ideas
These materials - which will be explored more thoroughly later in the workshop

Additional information
These are the Learning models used to develop the Teaching and Assessing Guides.
They were selected because they :
support constructivist methodology
use a range of thinking and learning styles
provide opportunity for ongoing authentic assessment
build on prior knowledge of learners
Each of these models is an interactive tool online.
By clicking on each section of the model - learning activities and thinking methodology behind each component will appear to view.

The Teaching and assessing Guides have been organised by learning models or by band.
Points to explain:
1. In the left hand menu- the ‘Boyd’ model has been opened, displaying the titles available of the TAGs.
2. In this example the Cemetery study has been selected.
3. Navigate through the TAG by using the ‘next’ arrow (the first screen is only the summary which detail the links to the SACSA Framework)

7. Insites Additional information
‘Insites’ was initiated by SAPPA and jointly developed with DECS and teachers from around the state.
‘Educators’ Ideas’ section of the SACSA website provides a platform for educators to share their thinking and planning. This sub-web has been designed to act as an exchange for educators’ ideas. It will grow and develop with regularly uploaded new material.

8. Before you start When using the Insites materials, ask yourself:
How could this learning experience build on the prior knowledge that students bring with them?
How will I cater for the diversity of learning needs in my classroom?
Are these activities suitable for individuals or groups of learners within my classroom?
How will I build authentic and ongoing assessment strategies into the program?
Will the selected Outcomes build towards the achievement of Learning Outcomes in other Learning Areas?

It is important to consider a range of factors when using any materials to support planning and programming in the classroom.
In the ‘Before you start’ document 5 questions have been posed for educators to consider.
Each of these questions has been referenced (by a direct hyperlink) to the section on the SACSA website which provides information and support about these issues.

9. Insites Select a Learning Area Additional information
This is the Insites welcome page
Q- What is Insites?
Insites provides examples of activities based on teachers’ exploration of the Key Ideas and Outcomes within each Learning Area from R-9.
While the SACSA Framework is constructed into bands that cover 3 or 4 year levels, Insites was developed to show possible ways that the journey within this band might be developed from year to year.
The suggested topics and activities embed the Essential Learnings, Equity Cross-curriculum Perspectives and Enterprise & Vocational Education.

10. Essence of the Learning Areas
Additional information
Each Learning Area within SACSA is unique in its structure and essence
These Learning Area essence pages are an important part of understanding how the Learning Area is unique, and how the Insites materials is therefore organised
The text also describes the way that the Insites materials have been developed using the Key Ideas individually or collectively to form the topics.
As previously stated the materials have been organised into year levels within each band.

It is important to stress that: not all learners progress at the same rate at the same time, therefore the activities will need to be adapted to meet the specific needs of individuals or groups of students.
In this example Yr 4 has been selected from the Primary Years Band.

11. Select a Key Idea or Outcome

Additional information
This page represents the Wall charts provided with the SACSA Framework folders. The section of the SACSA Framework presented on screen, displays the Key Ideas and appropriate Standard for the specific year level selected.
Entry to suggested topics is through selecting either a Key Idea or an Outcome.

12. Topics Additional information
At the top of the screen you will note that the Key Idea and Outcome are presented together. Neither one should be presented in isolation from the other when developing a class program.
Each Key Idea in SACSA leads towards the achievement of an associated Outcome.
Some Key Ideas and Outcomes have multiple topics provided for the year level selected. Browsing through each of these topics will provide a wider sense of ways that the Key Idea and Outcome can be addressed within the classroom program

13. Suggested activities Additional information
This screen displays a range of suggested activities which have been written to reflect possible ways that the Key Idea may be developed within a teaching and learning program.
These activities may spark alternative ideas or collectively provide a guide for planning a more detailed class program to reflect the specific needs and interests of individuals or groups of students.
It is important to note that some topics have been written with more than one Outcome in mind. By selecting the ‘Other Key Ideas and Outcomes within the scope of this topic’ on the side menu, you will be able to identify if more than one Outcome has been used.

The Insites materials can be modified to meet specific needs of teachers in R-9 settings.
Activities have been developed to enable constructivist approaches to be used. Therefore, when adapting the Insites materials for a class, group or individual student consideration should be given to these points:
How will prior knowledge be built on?
How will the diversity of abilities, interests of students be catered for?
Is this learning relevant to students?
How will students be involved in the negotiation of the learning and assessment?
Will Outcomes build towards learning in more than one Learning area?

17. Topic Overviews Classroom planning Whole School planning
Additional information
Topic overviews can be found on each Learning Area Essence screen. These provide a ready-reference of topics used in each of the learning areas from R-9. Many of the topics form themes across bands or a range of year levels.
These overviews may also provide valuable support for class and whole school planning.
In addition to providing planning and programming support, Insites can be used as a vehicle for schools to communicate possible learning pathways to parents/ caregivers and the school community.

18. Using the search tool Additional information
The key word search finds common words used within the topic titles and the first paragraph of each document.
The theme explorer provides a list of common themes developed within and across Learning Areas. These lists have been grouped into Bands, however some themes have been developed across R-9.

* If search is unsuccessful- look at the language/ concepts used within Key Ideas of a Learning Area and use these in the search. This produces a way to cross reference concepts that appear in a range of Key Ideas or Outcomes across Learning Areas.
