1 “Stop Calling It Vapor!”
The Truth About E-cigarettes

2 Learning Points Definition of e-cigarettes.
Difference between vapor and aerosol. Some of the dangerous chemicals present in e-cigarette aerosol. Explain what students will learn from this presentation.

3 E-cigarettes – What are they?
E-cigarette: battery-operated device designed to deliver nicotine with flavorings and other chemicals to users in aerosol instead of smoke. Also called vape pen, hookah pen, mods. Aerosol: a substance (as an insect repellent or medicine) that is released from a container as a spray of tiny solid or liquid particles in gas. Components of an e-cigarette Battery: power for the electronic cigarette Vaporizer: a sensor detects air flow when a user inhales and heats the liquid in the cartridge Cartridge/mouthpiece: contains propylene glycol, water, flavoring, and nicotine Right side: various types and brands of e-cigs and e-hookah pens. Battery operated device that delivers nicotine in the form of an aerosol Electronic smoking includes e-cigarettes, vape pens, hookah pens, vaporizers, mods

4 Vaporizer/atomizer coil Absorbent material/cotton:
Nicotine aerosol Vaporizer/atomizer coil Battery Absorbent material/cotton: Nicotine Propylene glycol Vegetable glycerin Flavorants Click to simulate the process of a users inhaling e-cigarette aerosol.

5 Vaporizing Refillable flavored tanks.
Flavoring is not state regulated or consistent Different levels of nicotine Over 7700 flavors Toxic to consume Highlights The tanks can be refilled with different flavors which are extremely enticing to youth. The flavors give the impression that it is safe to inhale. The percentage of nicotine contained in the liquid often is not consistent with what is on the label. E-juice is poisonous to consume.

6 E-cigarette fluids contain food grade chemicals safe for ingestion.
BUT Long-term effects of intake through inhalation are unknown. While the flavors have been approved for ingestion (to be eaten or drank), inhaling (breathing in) these heated flavors still have unknown results.

7 Here is a list of some of the dangerous chemicals inside of the aerosol inhaled and exhaled from e-cigarettes. E-cigarette and flavor manufacturers and marketers should not represent or suggest that the flavor ingredients used in e-cigarettes are safe because they have FEMA GRAS status (Generally Recognized as Safe) for use in food because such statements are false and misleading - Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA) 3/3/2015

8 Which would you be comfortable inhaling?
This is vapor Which would you be comfortable inhaling? While vapor is just water, aerosol is water plus chemicals that linger behind. E-cigarettes produce an aerosol, not vapor. This is aerosol

9 It’s not just vapor! Propylene glycol glycerin Flavorings (many)
Compounds in underlined are from FDA 2012, Harmful and Potentially Harmful Substances – Established List It’s not just vapor! Propylene glycol glycerin Flavorings (many) Nicotine NNN NNK NAB NAT Ethylbenzene Benzene P,m, xylene Toluene Acetaldehyde Formaldehyde Naphthalene Styrene Benzo(b)fluoranthene Chlorobenzene Crotonaldehyde Propionaldehyde Benzaldehyde Valeric acid Hexanal Fluorine Anthracene Pyrene Acenaphthylene Acenapthene Fluoranthene Benz(a)anthracene Chrysene Retene Benzo(a)pyrene Indeno(1,2,3-cd)pyrene Benzo(ghi)perylene Acetone Acrolein Silver Nickel Tin Sodium Strontium Barium Aluminum Chromium Boron Copper Selenium Arsenic Cadmium Silicon Lithium Lead Magnesium Manganese Potassium Titanium Zinc Zirconium Calcium Iron Sulfur Vanadium Cobalt Rhubidium These are lists of chemicals that have been identified within exhaled aerosol. Many of these chemicals are carcinogens, meaning that they are known to cause cancer. The far right column is full of metals, definitely not good to have in your lungs!

10 Why is it important to “Stop Calling is vapor?”
The word “vapor” or “vaping” gives the impression that it is harmless. Aerosol is not harmless. The long term effects of using electronic smoking devices is unknown. Our lungs are not designed to take in the different chemicals present in e-cigarette aerosol. September Kahoot:
