Do Now: Take 3 minutes to review anything you need for the Revolutionary War/Articles of Confederation Quiz.

3 The Constitution The Constitution was written at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. It was completed on September 17, – Constitution Day.

4 The Constitution gives us the rules (laws) for the whole country
The Constitution gives us the rules (laws) for the whole country. The Constitution also tells us what rights and privileges we have as Americans.

5 Some of our rights are listed in the Bill of Rights,
which are the 1st 10 Amendments of the Constitution.

6 Breaking down the Preamble:
The Preamble is the introductory part of a constitution or statute that usually states the reasons for and intent of the law.

7 Why a Bill of Rights? Read aloud as a class.
Students answer questions 3 & 4 in their notebooks.

8 Look over the Bill of Rights and highlight rights with which you are unfamiliar.

9 Handout C: YOU be the Judge.
In groups, read the handout, answer the two questions on a separate sheet of paper. After you have finished the questions, you will receive a discussion card that will tell you the decision the court made. Do you agree with the decision? Choose a reporter to report out your scenario, the decision, and if the group agreed with the decision.

10 Groups report-out on their scenarios and their reactions.

11 List 4 of the amendments from the Bill of Rights.
