Welcome Welcome to Stuttsville. I am EXCITED about this upcoming school year and I look forward to working with you and your child. It is my goal to make the time spent in fourth grade a fun, positive and productive learning experience and to inspire your child to become a life-long learner. Presentation This presentation is a review of our classroom policies and is designed to answer some of the most common questions you may have about 4th grade. All text can be changed on these slides. Meet the Teacher This will be my 18th year teaching at Shepherd – every year in 4th grade! I received my teaching degree from The University of Oklahoma and my Masters in Educational Leadership from Gardner-Webb University. My daughter, Kenzie, is an 8th grader at Lakeshore Middle and my son, Latt, is a 5th grader here at Shepherd. My favorite pastime is spending time with my kids, husband, friends and pets. I love problem solving and have a hard time turning down a challenge. I love reading for pleasure and to learn new ways to teach my students. All text can be changed on these slides. Grading Guidelines Your child’s report card grade will be calculated based on the criteria shown below. Tests/Quizzes 60% Class Work 30% Homework 10% Special projects will be graded according to a rubric and then incorporated into the student’s grade for the appropriate grading period. Extra credit opportunities may be provided at the discretion of the teacher. Include your class rules on this slide 5

Behavior Management Success for all students is contingent upon a positive classroom environment. A great deal of time is spent at the beginning of the school year teaching your child the classroom procedures and the appropriate behaviors for the situations he or she will encounter on a daily basis. Throughout the year, your child will be working in whole group settings, small group settings, partnerships, and independently. It is expected that your child follow all classroom rules and directions, as well as all school behavioral expectations, including bus policy. Explain your method of managing behavior. Do you use a clip chart? Card pulling system? Something else? Include a picture if you can!

Behavior Management We will be using a color coded disciplinary system to help your child self-monitor his/her behavior. If a student is not following a classroom rule, the teacher will remove a card from the pocket on the student’s desk. The color of the card will indicate the consequence. There are 4 cards. green card indicates that a student is exhibiting good behavior and is following all classroom expectations. yellow card indicates that a student has made a poor choice and received a warning for his or her behavior. orange card indicates that there has been a second infraction. At that time, the student will be asked to reflect, in writing, on their choices and how they can improve their behavior. Your child will then bring home the sheet so he or she can discuss their behavior with you. Please sign the sheet and return it to school the next day. red card indicates there is a need for a parent contact, via or phone call. It is reserved for more serious issues that require adult discussion. This policy has been reviewed with the students and is posted in the classroom. Explain your method of managing behavior. Progress Reports and Report Cards
Progress reports and report cards will be issued according to the ISS schedule. The reports will be sent home in a reusable envelope. Please discuss the report with your child, sign the envelope, and then return it to me. You may keep the report. The signed envelope is the only way I know that you have seen and discussed the information with your child. Explain your method of managing behavior. Do you use a clip chart? Card pulling system? Parent Assist on NCWise
During the time frame between progress reports and report cards, parents are able to view their child’s grades via the Parent Assist function on NCWise. Please notify me if you need help with this. Explain what students will be required to learn/do in reading this year. You might want to talk about Daily 5/Literacy Centers/Workstations if you use them in your classroom. Homework Agenda Your child will record all homework assignments in his or her agenda. You can purchase an agenda for $3.50 at Open House or you may send in cash or a check (made out to Shepherd Elementary School). All agendas should be purchased by September 4, 2012. Homework & Agenda I believe that communication is key to your child’s success. Please check your child’s agenda daily to see homework assignments or notes. Initial assignment to say that you have seen the completed work. Write any notes that you need me to see in the agenda. Explain what students will be required to learn/do in reading this year. Homework Policy Homework is a way for your child to practice and reinforce important skills he or she is learning in school. It should be viewed as a positive way for you to engage your child in a discussion about what he or she is learning in school. Children are expected to complete reading homework and math homework Monday through Thursday. In addition, your child may have to complete work that he or she did not finish during class. Explain what students will be required to learn/do in reading this year. You might want to talk about Daily 5/Literacy Centers/Workstations if you use them in your classroom. Reading Homework Book in a Bag- Students are required to read 30 minutes per day and then write a thoughtful response in their reading log. Students have been shown how to construct a quality entry and parents can find a copy of the directions and questions inside the front cover. A copy of the rubric is on the back cover. Reading materials will be kept in a gallon size zip lock baggie to protect the books and help keep them together. The reading logs will be collected on Friday and reviewed by the teacher. A grade will be assigned based on the quality of the students work and this grade will serve as a portion of the student’s homework grade. Math Homework Your child’s math homework will have a different format than in previous years. Students will be expected to complete a short math assignment Monday through Thursday. The assignment should include an explanation of how the child solved the problem. Often there are multiple ways to solve math problems and children are required to explain their thought process. The work will be reviewed by the teacher and the information gleaned from student responses will be used to guide instruction. The portion of your child’s math homework grade will be based upon the completion of the assigned work, the quality of the explanation and the accuracy of the answer. Weekly Folder Every Wednesday your child will receive a folder with your child’s work. The folder may contain tests, quizzes, and class work. Classroom practice work may or may not have a grade on it. Some work may have corrections written on it. We will work to make corrections when needed. Students need many opportunities to practice before they are formally assessed on a skill or topic. Please review the contents of the folder with your child then sign and return the folder on Thursday morning. Explain what students will be required to learn/do in math this year. 15

Special Classes Our Enhancement schedule is as follows: Monday –Art
Tuesday – Technology Wednesday – P.E. Thursday – P.E. Friday – Music * On P.E. days please make sure your child wears tennis shoes and dresses appropriately. If they do not dress appropriately they will have to sit out. Type your special class information here. Mine is included as a starting point.
