2 Ratifying the U.S. Constitution
September 17, 1787 the Constitution was signed and ready to be approved by the American citizens. Each state set up a special convention to vote or of the 13 states had to approve the Constitution for it to be passed. “yes” “no.”

3 Difficult Ratification
Some people in America did not support the Constitution. They felt it gave too much power to the government. The delegates knew that if the Constitution was not supported by the people it would fail.

4 Supporters of the Constitution!
Federalists Supporters of the Constitution! Wrote the Federalist Papers to gain support for the Constitution. They explained the problems that existed under the Articles of Confederation. Authors: Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison.

5 Were against the Constitution!
Anti-Federalists Were against the Constitution! They thought the Constitution gave the government too much power. They wanted to add a Bill of Rights to protect the rights of citizens.

6 The Anti-Federalist’s agreed to support the Constitution if a Bill of Rights was added after ratification. On June 21, 1788, New Hampshire became the 9th state to ratify and the Constitution went into effect. Compromise
